How Google Works

Backstage

Here's what's going on behind the scenes.
  • Googlebot, a web crawler that finds and fetches web pages.
  • The indexer that sorts every word on every page and stores the resulting index of words in a huge database.
  • The query processor, which compares your search query to the index and recommends the documents that it considers most relevant.

How to spot a gun

using a graph

Edward Tufte has this discussion about a graphic that shows how to spot a hidden firearm.
"Color is used to highlight how the gun moves and how the gun reveals itself, short visual noun-verb sentences that indicate the key signs that help detectives to spot someone carrying a hidden handgun. Thus the color usually has a distinct substantive point and is not just used to depict surfaces or to decorate the news."

Bracket Characters

Solutions

Certain special characters must be surrounded with brackets:
"Microsoft Access does not restrict the use of special characters such as a number sign (#), a period (.), or a quotation mark (") in the database object names or in the database field names. However, if you do use the special characters, you may experience unexpected errors.
" To work around this problem, do not use special characters. If you must use special characters in query expressions, enclose the special characters in brackets ([]). For example, if you want to use the greater than sign (>), use [>]."
